CAMP SEABEE
AT EAGLE FARM IN BRISBANE
HOME FOR THE UNITED STATES NAVAL
CONSTRUCTION BATTALION 55
The 55th Battalion Seabees arrived in Brisbane on 25 March 1943. They camped at Doomben Race Track near Eagle Farm airfield. They built their camp which was known as Camp Seabee on Eagle Farm Road beyond the Base Section 3 Stockade at Eagle Farm and the Australian CCC Camp. It only took them 10 days to build.
When they left Camp Seabee it was handed over to the Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit (CBMU).

Russell Manning advised me on 12 September 2022 that he had visited the National Archives of Australia office in Brisbane that morning and found the above photo showing the shop that housed the Arran Post Office agency located on the corner of Racecourse Road and Hamilton Road (now Kingsford Smith Drive) at Hamilton. It had originally started as Blake's Store in 1904. It became Hamilton Central Post Office agency in 1959. A new Hamilton Central Post Office was built on the site in 1960. It was no longer an agency in a local store.
