NEBO BATTERY, RED HILL, PORT KEMBLA,
NSW
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
Construction of Illowra Battery at Red Point, Port Kembla started in late 1941 to install two 6" Mk XI guns. Whilst this work was underway two BL 60-pdr Mk I guns from 1 Medium Battery were installed as Nebo Battery at Red Hill as an interim measure. It is believed that Red Hill, Red Point and Hill 60 are all the same location.
Illowra Battery at Hill 60, Red Point was completed in February 1942. In July 1942 the gunners of 1 Medium Battery returned to their unit to relocate to Queensland. The two obsolete 60-Pdrs at Nebo Battery, Red Hill were maintained on site until they were withdrawn in September 1942.
