USS ORION AS18
SUBMARINE TENDER
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
Submarine Tender USS Orion AS18 was built by Moore Dry Dock Company, Oakland, California. Her keel was laid on 31 July 1941 and she was launched on 14 October 1942. Captain C.S. Isgrig, US Navy, was her first Commanding Officer.
USS Orion's mission was to provide adequate, prompt, and efficient service to submarines and related ships. Those services were:-
to assist with maintaining their material readiness
to provide an adequate stock of consumables supplies
to enhance the morale of their crews
USS Orion was armed with 4 - 5" 38 caliber guns (Dual Purpose), 4 - 40mm Twin Mounts, and 23 - 20mm Single Mounts.
