The US Navy Aircraft Torpedo Unit Navy 87 was based at Nowra in New South Wales, Australia during WWII.

 

Entry in the War Diary of Commander Service Force, Seventh Fleet

 

The War Diary of Commander Service Force, Seventh Fleet has the following entry for 1 November 1942:-

Aircraft Torpedo Unit, Nowra

Chief Gunner F. Andrews, U.S. Navy, has assumed his duties as Officer in Charge. This Unit has been functioning as an overhaul and training section with the Royal Australian Air Force at the Nowra Airdrome.

The Operations Record Book (ORB) for RAAF Station, Nowra states that Chief Gunner Andrews (USN) arrived at RAAF Station, Nowra on 16 June 1942 and started duties in the Torpedo Section. Lieutenant Drake (USN) arrived on 17 June 1942 and also commenced duties in the Torpedo Section. The ORB also shows that as at 30 June 1942, there were two US Navy Officers and 8 Enlisted Men based at RAAF Station, Nowra. It is assumed that these men were assigned to US Navy Aircraft Torpedo Unit Nowra - Navy 87.
