The 5211 Engineer Battalion, US Army was established in Cairns in far north Queensland in September 1943. It was composed of mostly men who had been reassigned from the 411th Engineer Base Shop Battalion plus some replacements from the USA.
The 5211th were initially based at Redlynch and assisted the AWC with the construction a new US Army Station Hospital at Jungara. The 5211th left Cairns for New Guinea on 22 October 1943 to build the larger LCM's and LCT's.
