28TH SURGICAL HOSPITAL, US ARMY
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII

The 28th Surgical Hospital was activated on 10 February 1941, and embarked for Australia on 4 March 1942. It would appear they were initially based at Camp Darley in Melbourne.

On 4 October 1942, the Base Section Surgeon, Base Section 3 in Brisbane ordered the 155th Station Hospital to immediately relieve the 28th Surgical Hospital at Camp Cable of the operation of a hospital unit at Camp Cable near Tamborine Village and this was officially accomplished at midnight on 6 October 1942, receiving 141 patients.

Eight additional nurses from the 28th Surgical Hospital were attached to the 155th Station Hospital on 21 December 1942 for temporary duty. Between 25 to 29 December 1942, 50 men from the 28th Surgical Hospital were attached to the 155th Station Hospital.

The 28th Surgical Hospital possibly moved to Camp Columbia from Camp Cable. The "History of the 42nd General Hospital in World War II" states that the Chief Nurse of the 28th Surgical Hospital at Camp Columbia was in charge of the Nurses' Staging Area which had previously been the Malaria Section at Camp Columbia. The nurses of the 28th Surgical Hospital were attached to the Convalescent Section and performed regular duties with the nurses of the 42nd General Hospital Detachment at Camp Columbia.

On 30 March 1943, six nurses from the 28th Surgical Hospital, were attached to the 153rd Station Hospital at Southport. They returned to the 28th Surgical Hospital on 2 August 1943.

The 28th Surgical Hospital was later redesignated as the 360th Station Hospital on 28 October 1942. General Douglas MacArthur inspected the 360th Station Hospital on 14 December 1943 as well as the 32nd Division, the 9th General Hospital and the First Marines. The entry in MacArthur's office diary does not give the location but most likely at Camp Cable.
