INTELLIGENCE SECTION SIS
MELBOURNE, VIC 1941 - 1945
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
Special Intelligence Section SIS operated out of Land Headquarters in Victoria Barracks on St. Kilda Road, Melbourne. It was a small organisation which worked against Japanese diplomatic targets, successfully exploiting the Purple and Red Cypher systems. SIS operated an intercept site at Bonegilla in north western Victoria. It was headed by Professor A. D. Trendall.
SIS may have also been known as the Melbourne Communications Intelligence Unit.
