SERVICE POLICE UNIT
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
The RAAF Service Police Unit was formed on 6 April 1942 with the following Sections:-
Headquarters Section
Training Section
Victorian Section
South Australian Section
Albury Section
New South Wales Section
Queensland Section
West Australian Section
Darwin Section
A Townsville Section was added shortly later.
Service Police Unit Headquarters was established at 10-12 Latrobe Street, Melbourne. The Victorian Section and the Training Section were also housed in the same building. Training itself took place at No. 1 School of Technical Training, Exhibition N.3.
The functions of the Service Police Unit were to administer the Sections of the Unit, and to supervise the Assistant Provost Marshals and City Patrols at:-
Melbourne
Adelaide
Albury
Sydney
Brisbane
Townsville
Darwin
Perth
As the Unit's Establishment did not provide for Accounting or Medical Officers, the personnel of the various sections of the Unit were attached for Accounting and Medical purposes as follows:-

The Service Police Unit in Melbourne took over a house called "Warwick" at 42 Finch Street, East Malvern on 17 June 1942.
The Brisbane Section of the RAAF Service Police Unit was responsible for maintaining discipline of Air Force personnel in Brisbane. When they outgrew their premises they moved into a large house named "Careno" at 79 Moray Street, New Farm at the river end of Barker Street which provided separate and independent accommodation including Office, Messing and Sleeping space. "Careno" at that time was already being used as the Provost Marshal's Headquarters.
In 1943 the Establishment for the Brisbane Section was as follows:-
