114 AIR
SEA RESCUE FLIGHT RAAF
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
No. 114 Air Sea Rescue Flight RAAF was formed in Cairns, north Queensland on 18 July 1945 in accordance with War Establishment Table HD824 dated 6 June 1945. Most of the personnel who formed this new unit were from 41 Squadron RAAF which was in the process of disbandment from the same date. Squadron Leader George Moore Mason (260691) was appointed as the first Commanding Officer.
It took 4 to 6 weeks before all equipment matters were finalised for the new unit. Aircraft schedules were being checked and the aircraft were to be taken over in early August 1945.
Squadron Leader D. White and a party from 40 Squadron RAAF arrived at 114 Air Sea Rescue Flight on 19 July 1945 in connection with the formation of a Martin Mariner Detachment. They were expected to be a lodger unit with 114 Air Sea Rescue Flight until the middle of August 1945.
Martin Mariner Aircraft A70-8 and A70-11 were taken over by 114 Air Sea Rescue Flight from 41 Squadron RAAF on 1 August 1945. Mariner A70-7 was similarly taken over on 5 August 1945 and was posted to Bowen for Air Sea Rescue duties on 6 August 1945. A70-8 was posted to Merauke for Air Sea Rescue duties on 6 August 1945.
Mariner A70-12 departed for Merauke on 13 August 1945 and A70-8 returned to Cairns the same day. Mariner A70-11 departed for 1 F.B.R.D at Lake Boga on 14 August 1945 for its 240 hourly inspection and to collect Mariner A70-6.
The Japanese surrendered to the Allies on 15 August 1945. No. 40 Squadron Mariner Detachment proceeded to Port Moresby on 17 August 1945 leaving its Maintenance party in Cairns.
114 Air Sea Rescue Flight eventually relocated to Garbutt Airfield in Townsville in September 1946. The unit appears to have changed its name to 114 Search and Rescue Flight in August 1947. 114 Search and Rescue Flight was disbanded on 1 October 1947.
