MISTER SQUIGGLE GOES TO WAR
CORPORAL NORMAN FREDERICK HETHERINGTON NX131018
Norman Hetherington was the creator of Mister Squiggle, one of Australia's longest running TV children's shows which first aired on 1 July 1959. Norman was the operator and voice of the Mr. Squiggle marionette. He married Margaret Owrid (nee Purnell) in 1958 and she would write the scripts for the show. Norman's daughter Rebecca later went on to co-host the Mr. Squiggle show with her father.
During WWII, Norman Hetherington enlisted in the Australian Army and was assigned to Detachment No. 4 of the First Australian Army Entertainment Unit serving in Dutch New Guinea (Merauke), New Guinea, New Britain and the Torres Strait Islands. Other well known Australian entertainers in the Entertainment Unit were Michael Pate and George Wallace, Jr.
