P-40E KITTYHAWK COLLIDES WITH
TRANSPORT VEHICLE
ON RUNWAY AT PEARCE AIRFIELD, WA
ON 4 APRIL 1942
On 4 April 1942 P-40 Kittyhawk A29-56 of 77 Squadron RAAF piloted by Pilot Officer S. E. Armstrong was taxying back to the hangar after a training flight when it collided head on with a transport vehicle of the Department of Interior that was working on the runway.
The port wing three ribs back from the wing tip was damaged along with the port aileron. The airscrew was also extensively damaged. The fuselage belly cowling and cooling gills were also damaged. Both bracing struts on the port leg were also broken.
