CRASH LANDING OF A KITTYHAWK
AT MILDURA AIRFIELD, VIC
ON 20 MARCH 1945

A P-40 Kittyhawk C3-523 (#43-22777) (see Note below) of 2 Operational Training Unit RAAF damaged it airscrew when it tipped on its nose on 20 March 1945 at Mildura Airfield, Victoria. The damage was repaired straight away at 2 OTU.

P-40 Kittyhawk C3-523 had been received by 2 OTU ex NEI Pool on 5 March 1945. It had earlier been received into the NEI Pool from 120 Squadron NEI-AF on 13 April 1944.

Note:- Page 428 of the 2 OTU ORB, see link below, states that the above aircraft was Kittyhawk A29-523 which cannot be true as ADF Serials shows A29-523 colliding with A29-530 and both aircraft exploding and crashing on 27 January 1944. 75 Squadron ORB page 441, also confirms that A29-523 and A29-530 were both destroyed on 27 January 1944. Gordon Birkett provided me with a copy of the "History (Movements, Casualties, Etc) card for C3-253 which confirms that C3-253 was allocated to 2 OTU at the time of this accident and is most likely the aircraft involved in this accident.

The entry for A29-523 on page 428 should read C3-523.
