CRASH OF A P-40 KITTYHAWK
10 MILE SOUTH OF MILDURA AIRFIELD, VIC
ON 8 FEBRUARY 1945

P-40 Kittyhawk A29-85 crashed 10 miles south of Mildura Airfield, Victoria on 8 February 1945 killing the pilot Flying Officer Thomas Watson Wood (421650). There were no witnesses to the actual impact of the aircraft but from the position of the aircraft remains etcetera, it was assumed that it had hit the ground in an almost vertical dive after the pilot had lost control of the aircraft.

As a result of the aircraft accident that were occurring a considerable distance from 2 OTU, a reorganisation of the Unit Ambulance Control was planned. A Tiger Moth on strength would be used by the Medical Officer to transport him to the crash scene without delay. A comprehensive medical kit was designed to be carried in the Tiger Moth. A VHF two way radio was installed in the crash ambulance.
