CRASH OF A LOCKHEED HUDSON
BETWEEN BAIRNSDALE, VIC AND FLINDERS ISLAND
ON 11 OCTOBER 1942

Lockheed Hudson A16-18 of No. 1 Operational Training Unit 1 OTU, took off from Bairnsdale Airfield at 1430 hours on 11 October 1942 on a Photographic Reconnaissance exercise flight to seaward, Exercise DR4, to Flinders Island and return.

When the aircraft had been declared as overdue and missing, six Lockheed Hudsons took off from Bairnsdale at 0651 hours on 12 October 1942, to make a search to seaward. Four Oxford aircraft also took off to carry out a coastal search. There were nil sightings of the missing aircraft.

The following crew members were eventually presumed dead:-

Flying Officer Edward Raymond Deacon (408978)
Sergeant Albert Fletcher Manning (415038)
Sergeant Cecil Humphrey Andrews (405340)
Sergeant William Anderson (405389)

The cause of the loss and the location of the accident were unknown.
