CRASH OF A BEAUFIGHTER
AT LAVERTON AIRFIELD, VIC
ON 14 JULY 1942

At about 1400 hours E.S.T. on 14 July 1942, RAAF Beaufighter A19-25 (T4977) of No. 1 Aircraft Depot Laverton crashed at Laverton Airfield, in Victoria when an engine failed after takeoff causing the aircraft to stall. The aircraft was extensively damaged.

The crew, as follows, both survived the crash:-

Flying Officer William Charles Gatenby (5939)
Leading Aircraftman John Wilson Birchall (34882)

F/O Gatenby was admitted to 115 AGH Hospital at Heidelberg with serious head injuries. He was removed from the seriously ill list by 20 July 1942. F/O Gatenby was attached to No. 1 Aircraft Depot at Laverton at the time of this crash.

LAC Birchall suffered shock and some abrasions as a result of the crash.
