CRASH OF A DOUGLAS DC-2
AT MALLACOOTA AIRFIELD, VIC
ON 25 NOVEMBER 1942
At about 1101 hours EAST Douglas DC-2 A30-10 of 36 Squadron RAAF, crashed on take off at Mallacoota Airfield in Victoria after the failure of the starboard engine. Those on board were as follows:-
F/O J. L. Whiteman (2641) - Pilot - slightly injured
P/O Frank John Ball (406911) - slightly injured
Sgt. Arthur John Stribley (420409) - slightly injured
LAC Johan Vanderway (47614) - slightly injured
LAC Robert Lyle Vance (41843) - slightly injured
Cpl Jack Mervyn Greenhill (42802) - Severely injured
NOTE:- There is a Flight Lieutenant James Leighton Dennett Carlile Whiteman (023865 (3203)) listed in the WWII Nominal Roll. Doing a search for the Service Number 2641 in the WWII Nominal Roll does not bring up anyone called Whiteman or Whitman. So I assume the pilot above was Flying Officer James Leighton Dennett Carlile Whiteman (023865 (3203)).
