CRASH OF A WIRRAWAY
ON ISLAND LAGOON,
100 MILES NW OF PORT AUGUSTA, SA
ON 27 MAY 1944

 

On the 27 May 1944, RAAF Wirraway A20-634, crashed and burned at Island Lagoon about 100 miles NW of Port Augusta SA. There was ground fog and it crashed onto the salt lakes on its way to 1AD Laverton.

Both crew members from 1 Aircraft Depot at Laverton were killed as follows:-

Warrant Officer George Frederick Quinn (416999)
Pilot Officer John Joseph Hayes (409406)
