ON 28 NOVEMBER 1943
At about 1037 hours E.A.S.T. on 28 November 1943, P-40N Kittyhawk A29-498 (#42-104720) of 80 Squadron RAAF made a forced landing at Aitkenvale Airfield in Townsville in north Queensland after an engine failure. The pilot Sergeant Peter Parkinson (429992) was uninjured. Sgt Parkinson tried to stop his aircraft but it overshot the airfield striking a runway drain. The undercarriage collapsed and was damaged beyond repair.

The pilot, later Flying Officer Peter Parkinson, was killed on 13 October 1944.
