CRASH OF A P-39D AIRACOBRA
AT LOWOOD AIRFIELD, QLD
IN APRIL 1942
P-39D Airacobra #41-6738 of the 36th Pursuit Squadron, 8th Pursuit Group made a wheels up landing at Lowood Airfield (Somerset) in south east Queensland in April 1942. The aircraft remains were transferred to RAAF 3AD and returned to AAF. It was not allocated to an RAAF Squadron and was returned to the USA on 27 January 1944 and surveyed on 28 April 1944.
Gordon Birkett contacted me on 24 October 2023 and stated that the only April 1942 accident at Lowood was #41-6738 and provided the following information which suggests that perhaps 2nd Lt. MacIsaac was the pilot of the P-39D Airacobra. He crashed on landing at Lowood and the aircraft caught fire. The pilot managed to jump out of the aircraft and was badly injured. He was taken to Gatton Base Hospital to be treated for severe burns.
