CRASH OF A P-40 KITTYHAWK
7 MILES SOUTH OF WEST HILL ISLAND
S.E. OF MACKAY, QLD
ON 16 OCTOBER 1943
At approximately 1022 hours E.A.S.T. on 16 October 1943, Kittyhawk A29-511 of 2 Aircraft Park, Bankstown, crashed into the sea 7 miles south of West Hill Hill south east of Mackay, in north Queensland. The P-40 dived into the sea about 3 miles from the shore during a non-operational ferry flight. The pilot Sergeant Donald Gregory Wilum (416639) was declared missing in action, believed dead.
On 16 October 1943, a report was received at 3 Fighter Sector Headquarters in Townsville from No. 4 VAOC, that P-40 Kittyhawk A29-511 had crashed into the sea 7 miles south of West Hill Island, south of Mackay. 3 FSHQ advised A.O.R. who reported that they had the matter in hand.
