FORCED LANDING OF A WALRUS
NEAR CAPE BOWLING GREEN
ON 4 OCTOBER 1943
At 0945 hours on 4 October 1943, No. 33 Z.F.C. notified 3 Fighter Sector Headquarters that Walrus X9510 of 9 Squadron RAAF at Bowen had forced landed near Cape Bowling Green after an engine failure. No. 41 Squadron was informed and a crash launch was despatched. At 2010 hours the Walrus arrived at Townsville, towed by the crash launch. The crew were unhurt.
The Walrus had taken off from Bowen at 0820 hours on a travel flight to Cairns. Approximately 45 minutes later engine trouble developed and the aircraft was forced landed on the sea north of Cape Bowling Green. Inspection of the engine after landing failed to reveal the cause of the trouble.
