FORCED LANDING OF AN AVRO ANSON
ON BOWEN BEACH, BOWEN,
NORTH QUEENSLAND
ON 31 OCTOBER 1942

 

Avro Anson DG 914 piloted by Sergeant Banborough arrived at Bowen Airfield in north Queensland from Cairns at 1535 hours on 31 October 1942 with the following passengers:-

Lieutenant Colonel Rose AIF
Major Boleyn USA
Captain Kelley USN
Lieutenant Gillespie RANR
Sergeant Chapney

They took off for Mackay at 1815 hours on the same day but had to make a forced landing on Bowen Beach at 1820 hours in approximately 2 feet of water. The engines were half immersed in the sea water. There were no casualties.

Avro Anson DG 914 was salvaged at 2025 hours on the same day.
