FORCED LANDING OF A P-400 AIRACOBRA
1 MILES WEST OF WOODSTOCK AIRFIELD
NEAR TOWNSVILLE, QLD
ON 9 JUNE 1942

 

P-400 Airacobra BW153 of the 40th Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group piloted by 2nd Lieutenant Allan M. MacDonald (O-432001) made a forced landing 1 miles west of Woodstock Airfield near Townsville in north Queensland at 0915 hours on 9 June 1942 after an engine failure. 2nd Lt. MacDonald was uninjured. The 40th Fighter Squadron were based at Antil Plains Airfield at that time.

The forced landing resulted in repairable damage to the belly cowling, left flap, propeller, nose cowling and the air scoops. The aircraft was handed over to the 35th Air Base Group for repairs.

2nd Lt. Allan M. MacDonald later went missing in action on 9 July 1943 during a transit flight between Dobodura and Port Moresby.
