GROUND LOOP OF A BOOMERANG
AT HORN ISLAND AIRFIELD
IN FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND
ON 16 MAY 1943
At about 1315 hours K time on 16 May 1943, Boomerang A46-24 piloted by Sergeant Edmund Arthur Adams (411093), swung to starboard whilst landing at Horn Island. The port brake was applied but it was ineffective and the Boomerang ground looped and came to rest on the side of the runway after the port undercarriage leg collapsed. The aircraft was repaired by 12 RSU.
F/Sgt Adams was involved in a later accident in Boomerang A46-63 which forced landed on the beach three miles north of Red Island Point on 24 August 1943. Sadly F/Sgt Adams was later killed in action in Italy on 30 January 1945 whilst flying in Kittyhawk IV FT927 on operations. He was buried in a Cemetery in Padua, in Italy.
