FORCED LANDING OF DH-82 TIGER
MOTH
12 MILES NORTH OF IRON RANGE
ON 2 SEPTEMBER 1943
DH82 Tiger Moth A17-9 forced landed 12 miles north of Iron Range Airfield in far north Queensland on 2 September 1943. The pilot and his passenger were unhurt. The aircraft was not a write-off and was repaired at 1 RSU at Higgins Airfield.
A17-9 was allotted to 33 Squadron RAAF in Port Moresby from 5 EFTS storage on 22 August 1943. At the time of the accident, it was on its way to Port Moresby from 2 Aircraft Park 2 AP in Bankstown, New South Wales.
The Aircraft Record Card, which is hard to read, states that A17-9 forced landed at 26 OBU on 3 September 1943 (not 2 September 43) and received minor damage to the propeller, mainplane and lower port wing.
3 Fighter Sector Headquarters ORB shows the following entry:-
2.9.43 Co-operated with A.O.R. and No. 33 Zone Filter Centre in location of Tiger Moth A17-9 (DH-82) which crashed 12 miles NORTH of IRON RANGE. The pilot and passenger were unhurt.
After the war, Tiger Moth A17-9 became VH-AMZ.
