P-38 LIGHTNING TAXIING ACCIDENT
HOEVET AIRFIELD,
MAREEBA, NORTH QLD
ON 4 APRIL 1943
1st Lt. John Guttel O367709 of the 80th Fighter Squadron of the 8th Fighter Group was taxiing his P-38-G-LO Lightning #43-2390 from the revetment at Hoevet Airfield at Mareeba to the strip on 4 April 1943, when his right brake gave way causing the aircraft to veer off to the left side of the taxiway into a rocky area, thereby collapsing the nose wheel causing the aircraft to nose up. The nose of the pilot's nacelle, nose wheel strut and both propellers were damaged.
