LOSS OF A P-40 WARHAWK
BETWEEN TOWNSVILLE AND PORT MORESBY
ON 20 DECEMBER 1942
On 20 December 1942, 1st Lieutenant King W. Pipes O-428379 went missing on a delivery flight between Townsville and Port Moresby. He was listed as Missing in Action.
Note:- There is the following entry in the Northern Area Headquarters ORB which may or may not be related to this accident:-
HORN ISLAND | 20/12 | One Beaufort from 7 Squadron inner Anti submarine patrol for Force "NN" from dawn to dusk 20/12 (TO/G4/19) Amended to read one Catalina not one Beaufort (TO/G5/19) A24-30 E.T.D. 2000/19. Alighted Horn Island 0845/20. Convoy not sighted. Searched to lowest position 13742E 0600S. Sighted large patch of oil 60 by 30 ft. in position 1106S 13724E. Oil appeared to be still rising and spreading. |
