FORCED LANDING OF AN O-47
AT HALF WATER POINT
ABT 8 MILES NORTH OF PORT DOUGLAS, QLD
ON 19 APRIL 1942

 

On 19 April 1942, O-47, #37-339 c/n NA25-282 3rd Bomb Group (Lt), Headquarters Flight, forced landed and was wrecked at Half Water Point about 8 mile north of Port Douglas (about 6 miles NE of Mossman), in far north Queensland. Lt. Alexander G. Evanoff O-023391 (Class 39B), Sgt Finely and Sgt. John Muschko not seriously injured but taken Mossman Hospital. The two enlisted men were both members of the 8th Bomb Squadron of the 3rd Bomb Group.

No. 4 Volunteer Air Observer Corps in Townsville reported this incident as follows:-

19/4/42
Port Douglas Observation Post at 1330 hours reported aircraft bomber type about to make forced landing at Half Water Point - approx. 8 miles north of Port Douglas. Mossman V.D.C. contacted and started investigation parties being sent out. At 1410 Mossman reported American bomber found - forced landing. 3 injured airmen taken to Mossman Hospital - reported to A.C.H.
