CRASH OF C-47A-30-DL DAKOTA
ON SAND BANK IN TORRES STRAIT
ON 12 OCTOBER 1944
On 12 October 1944, a USAAF, C-47 Dakota, #42-23704, C/N 9566, force landed on a sand bank (possibly Tobin Cay) near Stephens Islet and Darnley Island in the Torres Strait in far north Queensland. Its wreckage was found at the location below. Apparently the pilot and his co-pilot died awaiting rescue.
