CRASH OF A WIRRAWAY
2 MILES NORTH OF TOOWOOMBA AIRFIELD, QLD
ON 7 APRIL 1942

 

Typical Wirraway

 

Wirraway A20-532 of 23 Squadron RAAF left Archerfield Airfield on 7 April 1942 on a navigational exercise to Toowoomba. The Wirraway was observed to stall and crashed and burnt at Winsonton about 2 miles north of Toowoomba Airfield killing the two crew members as follows:-

Sergeant Robert Eric Fraser (405304)
Sergeant James Alexander Mant (5799)

The aircraft was a complete write-off. The crash happened a short distance from Sergeant Fraser's parents home at Holberton Street, Toowoomba.

Sergeant Fraser was interred in the Toowoomba Cemetery Presbyterian Plot Sc.3, Blk.14, Almt.15, Grv. R841and Sergeant Mant was cremated at Mt. Thompson Crematorium, Holland Park, Brisbane.
