CRASH LANDING OF A VULTEE
VENGEANCE
AT CAIRNS AIRFIELD, NORTH QLD.
ON 10 JUNE 1943
At about 1220 hours on 10 June 1943, Vultee Vengeance A27-202 crash landed at Cairns Airfield on 1 June 1943. The crew of Squadron Leader John Beirne Hooper (270547) and Pilot Officer Jack Andrew Richardson (266363) of 12 Squadron RAAF were both uninjured.
The pilot, Sqn Ldr Hooper, did not see that the runway was under repair until dwelling off to land. Due to insufficient hydraulic pressure to raise the wheels and flaps, the pilot decided against a re-take off.
