RAAF Catalina, A24-24, of 20 Squadron RAAF, crashed into the sea 5 miles east of Bowen in north Queensland at approximately 1545 hours E.S.T on 17 August 1943 during an air to sea Gunnery Training exercise. At the conclusion of the firing practice the Catalina was making a run across the wave tops over a choppy sea and it is assumed that the Port Wing hit the water and the aircraft crashed into the sea.
