FORCED LANDING OF A KITTYHAWK
AFTER AN INCIDENT OVER ANSON BAY, NT
ON 16 SEPTEMBER 1942
On 16 September 1942, P-40 Kittyhawk, A29-63, #41-13528, piloted by F/O G.S. Gratton of 77 Squadron RAAF, was "shadow" shooting on the water over Anson Bay NT, when the starboard inner gun blew out the blast tube, causing damage to the leading edge of the wing. Gratton was able to make an emergency landing without mishap. The damage was repaired and the aircraft was returned to service.
