CRASH OF A B-26 MARAUDER
AT NOWRA, NSW
ON 1 JUNE 1942
B-26 Marauder #40-1507 of the 19th Bomb Squadron, 22nd Bomb Group with a crew of six personnel, crashed on landing and was totally destroyed by fire at RAAF Station Nowra, New South Wales on 1 June 1942. Two men were injured and admitted to Nowra Hospital as follows:-
Squadron Leader Gerard Francis Ell (209-0363) and Sergeant J. C. Laza were discharged from hospital at Nowra on 3 June 1942 and left by road for Moss Vale to board a train for Melbourne. Lt. McCluney USAAF arrived by aircraft to inspect the wreckage of B-26 Marauder #40-1507. He left by air the same day.
The aircraft had originally arrived in Australia on 30 April 1942 and was condemned on 1 June 1942.
Mark Clayton, the Director of the Australian Naval Aviation Museum at Nowra is researching this crash.
