CRASH OF A BEAUFORT
NEAR NOWRA AIRFIELD, NSW
ON 8 SEPTEMBER 1943

 

At about 1005 hours E.S.T. on 8 September 1943, Beaufort A9-113 of No. 6 O.T.U. crash landed, just failing to make Nowra Airfield, in New South Wales after the failure of its port engine.

The crew and passengers were injured as follows:-

F/Lt John Story Mercer (407246) - no injuries
F/Lt Edward Davies Suter (404791) - seriously injured
P/O Archibald Donald Buchanan (405090) - no injuries
F/Sgt Percival James Clisdell (403910) - Slightly injured
F/O Douglas Frank Remington Shetliffe (411198) - slightly injured
W/O Richard Neville Dunn (207640) - slightly injured
Sgt. Arthur John Matthew Mainwaring (36409) - slightly injured
F/O Spencer Ernest Hassell (402908) of 73 Squadron - slightly injured
LAC Kenneth Mervyn Owen (72129) - slightly injured
LAC Lawrence Robert Limon (52047) of Headquarters Nowra - no injuries

The lubrications system of the port engine failed during flight. The pilot was not able to maintain height with maximum power on the starboard engine. He failed to make Nowra Airfield at RAAF Station, Nowra, and crashed into trees at the side of the runway.
