CRASH OF A P-40 KITTYHAWK
AT WENTWORTH BOMBING RANGE, NSW
ON 30 MARCH 1945

 

At about 1228 hours on 30 March 1945, P-40 Kittyhawk A29-146 of 2 Operational Training Unit crashed at Wentworth Bombing Range in New South Wales killing the pilot Sergeant Alan Joseph Worboys Saunders (443620) who was taking part in a bombing exercise. A Court of Inquiry was constituted.

The Kittyhawk flicked after pulling out from a dive and the pilot could not regain control. The aircraft struck the ground and disintegrated. The Probable Cause listed on the "Preliminary Report" was stated as "Pilot in attitude resulting in a high speed stall."
