ON 24 OCTOBER 1943
At about 1440 hours on 24 October 1943, Vought Sikorsky Kingfisher A48-6 of 107 Squadron RAAF, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Lawrence Hainsworth Kirkman (416432), was involved in an accident after taking off from Lake Macquarie in New South Wales for a familarisation flight for Pilot Officer Kenneth James Dusting (427591). Immediately after the Kingfisher became airborne, the main float struck the bow of a rowing boat containing four people. The bow of the boat was shattered and a woman in the stern of the boat was struck on the head by the starboard wing-tip float of the aircraft.
