CRASH LANDING OF A P-40
KITTYHAWK
AT WILLIAMTOWN AIRFIELD, NSW
ON 24 FEBRUARY 1942
On 24 February 1942, 2nd Lieutenant Don G. McGee 0-430836of the 9th Fighter Squadron, was uninjured when his P-40 Kittyhawk #41-24796 left the runway at Williamtown Airfield and he hit a hole in some loose sand which tipped the aircraft over on its back. The tail and one wing of the aircraft were unrepairable. Apparently he had landed on a freshly laid concrete strip extension.
2nd Lt. Don G. McGee later flew P39 and P400 Airacobras with the 8th Fighter Group in Papua New Guinea.
