CRASH OF A SPITFIRE
1/2 MILE NORTH EAST OF PUBLIC SCHOOL,
CATTAI CREEK, NSW
ON 25 NOVEMBER 1942
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII

At about 1045 hours E.A.S.T. on 25 November 1942, Spitfire BS165 (A58-13) of 54 Squadron RAF crashed 1/2 mile north east of the Public School at Cattai Creek, in New South Wales. The pilot Sergeant William Kenneth Read (656769) was tragically killed after bailing out from his Spitfire. The Spitfire burst into flames after an internal glycol leak developed which resulted in an engine failure.

Sgt William Kenneth Read was buried in the Sydney War Cemetery, Grave A.C.3.
