CRASH OF AN AVRO ANSON
APPROX. 20 MILES SOUTH OF EVANS HEAD
ON 7 MARCH 1944

At 1445 hours on 7 March 1944, Avro Anson A.W.485 from 1 Air Observers School,1 A.O.S. RAAF suffered a probable loss of control in a cloud causing the aircraft to disintegrate in mid air and fall to the ground near Maclean, approximately 20 miles south of Evans Head in New South Wales, killing the five aircrew on board as follows:-

F/O Billie Strike-McClelland (412748) (Pilot)
F/Sgt. Bruce Allan Duckworth (409394)
LAC Robert Thomas Robertson (439616)
LAC Patrick John Scanlan (435197)
LAC Neville Thomas Self (433627)
