COLLISION OF A WIRRAWAY AND A KITTYHAWK
AT FAIRBAIRN RAAF BASE CANBERRA, ACT
ON 11 JUNE 1945

 

At 1315hrs on 11 June 1945  CA-9 Wirraway A20-465 whilst taxying at Fairbairn RAAF Base Canberra ACT collided with the port main plane of a taxying NEIAF Fighter Pool Aircraft C3-519 P-40N Kittyhawk.

Pilot - F/O Johnson Leslie Edward (417958) was not injured
Observer - Capt John Geoffrey Myers (NX112665) (2AIF) suffered lacerated fingers.

Both aircraft suffered severe damage. The incident was caused by a fractured brake line on Wirraway A20-465. The aircraft was issued to Clyde Engineering on 20 June 1945 for survey. It was received at 2CRD from Clyde Engineering on 16 November 1945.

It was recommended for conversion on 18 March 1946. Conversion had not taken place when the airframe was transferred to DAP for disposal on 22 November 1948.
