Lieutenant-General Sir Iven Mackay returned to Australia to command the Home Forces in August 1941. His role was to co-ordinate the defence of Australia. The Intelligence Section of Home Forces was initially set up in "A" Block building at Victoria Barracks in Melbourne.
The Intelligence Section of Home Forces then moved to Ivanhoe Grammar School in one of the outer suburbs of Melbourne.
