CAMP WALLAROO US ORDNANCE DUMP
NEAR DUARINGA, QUEENSLAND
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
Camp Wallaroo was an American Ordnance Dump located west of Duaringa in Central Queensland. There were four areas associated with Camp Wallaroo:-
Camp Area
Motor Pool
2 Ordnance Dumps
The camp area, motor pool and the northern Ordnance Dump areas were acquired in July 1942. The southern Ordnance Dump area was acquired in December 1942. All areas at Camp Wallaroo were vacated by 1 January 1944.
Buildings in the camp area included:-
mess kitchen
bathhouse
recreation building
administration building
two water tanks
four latrines
The Public Works Department, contractor R.L. Schofield and US troop labour constructed Camp Wallaroo. A 108 foot timber fire watch tower was built by the Public Works Department just north west of the northern Ordnance Dump.
The December 1942 Military Telephone Directory for Brisbane shows that the 636th Ammunition Ordnance Co. Det., an African American unit, was based at Camp Wallaroo at that time.
