BOMB AND AMMUNITION DUMP
BENEKE'S PADDOCK
CORNER OF WEBSTER ROAD AND RODE ROAD,
CHERMSIDE, BRISBANE, QLD
DURING WW2
There was a bomb and ammunition dump in Beneke's paddock in the bush near the corner of Webster Road and Rode Road. It was guarded by U.S. Negro soldiers.
The Civil Construction Corps (CCC) had a large camp near Ellison Road at Chermside in Brisbane during WW2.
A USAAF P-40 Kittyhawk crashed at nearby Camp Chermside in Brisbane in about 1944 about 50 metres from where the Kedron-Wavell RSL club is located. The AWAS camp was at the top of Kuran Street in Chermside.
There was a petrol dump in Basnett's property on Hamilton Road, Chermside.
Does anyone know which unit the Negro soldiers were from?
