5 Advanced Ammunition Depot (5 AAD) at Mataranka was under administration control from Keswick Barracks, in South Australia. Keswick was also the headquarters for 4 Advanced Ammunition Depot ( 4 AAD). The combined strength of both units at Keswick Barracks was 565 comprising 34 officers, 158 non-commissioned officers and 373 other ranks.

The depot at Mataranka was located about 3 kilometres from the Sturt Highway and the town of Mataranka.

On 24 June 1942, 4 AAD Headquarters were moved from the Wayville Showgrounds to Terowie, South Australia. (4 AAD  HQ's were later moved to Gladstone, in South Australia.

By March 1945 there was a drop in the operational activity at Advanced Ammunition Depots such as 5 AAD Mataranka and as much material as possible was being sent back to the Returned Empties Section at Finsbury Munitions Factory in South Australia. Similar material was returned to Finsbury from Pine Creek and Brock's Creek.
