"G" for George is now at the Treloar Centre in Canberra awaiting refurbishment.
You can visit the Treloar Centre Sundays & Wednesdays or groups by appt.
It is hoped George will be back at the AWM by April 2001 for the new ANZAC aircraft hall.

Hi Peter. Thanks for the Email.
No I don't work at Treloar, I work for a tourism magazine called This Week in Canberra.
I am interested in Lancaster as my Uncle was a pilot in 467 Squadron.
I live about 5-6 klm's from Treloar so if you ever want anything give me a yell.
I liked your home page on 460, and would like to do something for 467.
Cheers
JEFF

My Uncle Frank Dixon was a POW and in Stalag Luft 111.
He related some to me in 1978.
Left Stalag Luft 11 Late January.
Marched westwards in the snow for 8 days.
Snow was up to 2 ft deep.
Had 5 hrs notice before they left.
Luckenwalde was very crowded. They had little to do and no Red X parcels. Severe shortage of food.
Could see the RAF bombing Berlin at night.
For the few days before 22/4/45 the camp was very close to small arms fire and low flying riussioan planes.
Was " liberated " by the Russians on 22/4/45.
Spent till 19/5/ "prisoner" of the Russians, until being transported across the Elbe river.
I too am reresearching my Uncle's story.
I would appreciate any information on Stalag Luft 111. He was a RAAF pilot in 467 Squadron.
Regards
JEFF

STRIKE AND THE UNIT HISTORY OF by PETER FIRKINS |
This is a reprint of a book first published in 1964 and details the WW2 exploits of a famous Australian squadron that flew from Britain.
During the air war against the Germans, thousands of Australian airmen paid the ultimate price and No 460 had more than its share of men killed.
The squadron participated in all the major air battles over Europe and in doing so, faced heavy anti-aircraft concentrations as well as the highly skilled German night-fighters.
One historian described this book as: a worthy history of a great Australian squadron and will be read with keen interest not only by former members of a magnificent unit, but by very many others, old and young, seeking to know what it was like to serve in Bomber Command.
Peter Firkins served with the squadron and later became a well-known historian and the author of 10 other books.
