The St. Catherine's House marriage records show a marriage between Joseph Dunn and Mary
Ann Braxton in the September quarter of 1856 in South Molton Registration District,
Reference 5b 791.
Joseph Dunn and his wife Mary Ann arrived in Australia on the ship "Kate" in
Sydney on 23 December 1856. They travelled on the "Kate" with Joseph's younger
brother Henry. The shipping records show that Joseph and Mary Ann, both Church of England,
were from Filleigh, Devon and that Henry was from Chittlehampton. The village of Filleigh
is 2.5 miles north east of the village Chittlehampton. Joseph was 26, Henry was 15, and
Mary Ann was 27, when they arrived in Australia. Joseph and Mary Ann were living at
Coonambula in Queensland, Australia at the time of their daughter's (Martha's) birth in
1859. In May 1848 David and Thomas Archer took up land on the Burnett River in central
Queensland. These 2 runs were Coonambula and Eidsvold.
It is known that Joseph's younger brother, Henry Dunn worked for the Archer brothers at
Gracemere near Rockhampton in Queensland. It is possible that Joseph may also have worked
for the Archer brothers at Coonambula.
The 1889 & 1894 Queensland Post Office Directory show a Joseph Dunne, a selector,
living in the Westwood area which is west of Rockhampton.
Terry Stratford showed me a Queensland Brand's Directory book dated 1894 which must have
originally belonged to Joseph's brother, Henry Dunn, as it had his name on the front cover
in large writing. This book contained the following information about cattle brands:-
NAME | RUN OR FARM | NEAREST TOWN | BRAND |
Joseph DUNN | Wendah | Westwood | D42 - See Note 1 |
Joseph DUNN | Windah | Westwood | D42 - See Note 1 |
Maria DUNN | Windah | Westwood | NU3 - See Note 2 |
Henry DUNN | Gracemere | Gracemere | 5HU |
It is not possible to show the correct representation of
the Brand shapes with the standard character set, so it is necessary to describe some of
the differences as follows:-
Note 1 - the number 2 has a short vertical line at top right hand corner.
Note 2 - the letter N has a short horizontal line at top left hand corner and the letter U
is closed at the top with a horizontal line.
The 1909 Australian Commonwealth Electoral Rolls, Division of Capricornia, Subdivision of
Livingstone show Joseph and Mary Ann Dunn living at Moura Plains, Westwood. Joseph is
shown as a farmer, with Mary Ann on home duties. Martha Dunn's Birth Certificate states
that her parents, Joseph and Mary Ann Dunn were married in England in 1846. If Joseph was
29 in 1859, he would have been approximately 16 years old when he married. They were
actually married on 26 July 1856, about 4 to 5 months before they left for Australia.
Joseph and Mary Ann's daughter, Martha, was shown as living at Nora Plain, Westwood at the
time of her marriage to Christian Ludwig Ohl on 11 June 1884.
There is a File at the Queensland State Archives in Brisbane which has information on the
selection by Joseph Dunn. It is File Reference LAN/DF Rockhampton 985 (also 124)
The Queensland Death Indexes show a Joseph Dunn, who died on 4 April 1912, son of William
Dunn and Jane. Certificate No. 12/003737.
