USAT EDWARD CHAMBERS ATTACKED
BY JAPANESE SUBMARINE I-174
OFF CAPE MORETON, QLD
ON 4 JUNE 1943

 

American transport ship USAT Edward Chambers exchanged gunfire with Japanese submarine I-174 about 30 miles south east of Cape Moreton off southern Queensland on 4 June 1943 at 27-18 S, 152-53 E. Submarine I-174 crash dived to avoid the possibility of being sighted by Allied Aircraft or ships.

I-174 had been patrolling off the east coast of Australia since May 1943. I-174 had earlier attacked the Point San Pedro on 1 June 1943 and the Sheldon Jackson off New South Wales on 29 May 1943.

NOTE:- Another official source records the position as 27-17 S, 153-59E.
