WINTON AIRFIELD
WINTON, QLD
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
In the 1930s a new airfield was required at Winton in western Queensland for larger / heavier civilian aircraft / airliners. It was built to the north west of the town. This was to replace the first Qantas Airfield at Winton which was an overall airfield located north of Winton. A memorial to this very first airfield is apparently located at the Truck and Machinery Museum in Winton
This second airfield would have been the airfield that Wirraways from No. 12 Squadron RAAF landed at while en route from Melbourne to Darwin in September 1939.
Runways and the airfield circle are still visible in the landscape at Lat -22.365341 / Long 143.026039. This is presumably the airfield that Roger Marks lists as "Winton" in his Appendices in his book on Queensland WWII Airfields.
The new larger airfield was built to north east of the town of Winton in 1942.
