US ARMY 85TH STATION HOSPITAL
BASE SECTION TWO
AT MAJOR'S CREEK
DURING WWII

The US Army 85th Station Hospital was based at the large 1,000 bed American hospital at Major Creek on the other side of Mt. Elliot between Giru and Woodstock (closer to Woodstock). They arrived in Townsville by rail from Brisbane along with the 84th Station Hospital (went to Charters Towers) in late June 1943. The main hospital building were made of iron and the wards were built from fibro and timber. The Medical Corps lived in square tents in the paddocks. The hospital had its own electric generators and was was pumped from the local creek.

The 85th Station Hospital is listed on page 14 in the May 1944 edition of the Military Telephone Directory for Townsville. The 85th Station Hospital had relocated to Camp Tambourine (Camp Tamborine) prior to December 1944.

The following is from a menu for the 85th Station Hospital Christmas 1944 celebrations:-
